Does color matter?

While we were gone, Neil finally got his Science Project grade. I wrote "finally" because, at the fair, he had a second place ribbon, but a "?" for a grade.


Neil's project was about whether colored candles and non-colored candles burn at the same rate...the results...non non-colored candles burn faster.

Happy Mother's Day

After a two hour delay, Jeff and I made it hope to the Bay iArea around 4:30 pm. Luckily, United was able to find a crack in the hydraulic line that controls the landing gear BEFORE we left JFK...so, we ended up chaining planes. Unfortunately, this meant going back on the plane to retrieve our carry-on luggage. I had forgotten that I put my camera in the front seat pocket, and I remembered about 10 minutes prior to boarding our new plane. Luckily, I was able to have a gate attendant retrieve it for me. After thinking about it, I could have gotten a new camera...especially since I had downloaded all of my NYC pictures onto the iPad...oh, well...next time...

After picking up the boys, I went home to finish the dolls for the great-grandmothers. I worked on the legs, kimono, and obi on the trip...but, I still had to stuff and sew one body together and sew on the clasps....I finally was able to finish around 1 am...( 4 am NYC time)! They turned out cute...



This morning we joined the Jangs and Sekigahamas for The CYS Mother's Day pancake breakfast at the San Jose Betsuin (Buddhist Church). It was a nice breakfast fundraiser with almost 1,600 people attending. Afterwards, we did a little browsing in San Jose Japantown and met Gary for lunch.

After Ninja practice, we are heading to meet the family for dinner to celebrate Grandma's 95th birthday.



I think Grandma liked her doll...

Dinner at the University Club

The banquet for Jeff's meeting was held at The University Club on 5th Avenue. It was a short, nice walk...past lots of stores! I think there was a reason why Jeff took his time getting ready.


After a "Tri-color salad" of arugula, endive and radicchio (my favorite part of the salad was the goat cheese on a focaccia crisp"), Jeff had the Filet and I had the Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass.





Much to our dismay, dessert was delivered to the table and it was a trade if you want something else..."we" wanted the warm flour less chocolate cake or warm apple tart...we got the apple tart and the chocolate tulip with sorbet...

Enough about food...now about The University Club. Origins of the club date to 1861...where it's membership was allowed to only men. In 1987, it was voted that women be allowed to join.

The club was the setting for power dinners such as one in which Andrew Carnegie, Charles Schwab, JP Morgan and John D Rockefeller in which the US Steel Corporation was created.

In 1946, Winston Churchill was the featured speaker in the same dining room that we had dinner.

More impressive was the 4th floor Library...it was like a s nee from an old movie. The dark wood paneling...the large expanse of books...little stairways that lead to the higher shelves of books. I would have loved to take pictures, but, cameras were not allowed. One thing that looked out of place were the two PC's in the corner.

Another room had numerous game tables, some set up with chess sets etc.

From the literature that was provided, The University Club hosts one of New York's great private art collections.

Jeff and I didn't stay to explore...since we had to get back to pack for our trip home. (phew!!! Everything fit!). Then we hopped back onto the subway for some pizza in Little Italy...yum...sorry, no pics....I gotta get better about that!

My day alone....more shopping?

Friday Jeff went to work..and I went exploring.

A quick stop at the concierge and I found out Dylan's Candy Bar is only 10 minutes away...across from Bloomingdales. I love Dylan's It is a candy store on MAJOR steroids.


Dylan is Ralph Lauren's daughter...her store has every candy imaginable. Even the stairs and floor have candy...


There is a party room...



And a cupcake bar...



There is also a coffee/ice cream bar and candy mosaics throughout the store...

Besides the expected pizza places and hot dog stands...there are a ton of "make it yourself..." chopped salads, pizzas and pasta places. Basically you snooze the base and add what you want. Since Jeff is not a veggie lover, I stopped to get a salad on the way back to the room...


Tomorrow we head home, and I think everything will fit in the suitcases...the boys have been at Jeff's Mom's house...and my brother Gary has been in Salinas with my Dad. Dad had a VERY mild stroke last Sunday, he is fine and although is suppose to use a cane, is walking without it. When I was in Salinas, Gary and I discussed the NYC trip and we decided that I should still go...especially, since Jeff was staying at the Waldorf...let's face it, I will probably never stay here without this trip! THANK YOU GARY!

President Obama

When we woke up, there was a lot of action down in the streets....There were NYPD all over. With the events of this past week, the death of Bin Laden, President Obama was visiting Ground Zero on Thursday.


But, first, he was visiting a FDNY near the theater district.



Jeff tried to take a picture of the firehouse door...but, it came out a little bleary...sorry...


we went to Ground Zero...but, didn't wait to see the President...we had shopping to do!

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

We can't come to NYC, and NOT see a Broadway Musical...Jeff gave me a budget...and I found tickets for How to Succeed In Business without Really Trying..with Daniel Radcliffe from Harry Potter fame. Jeff went around telling everyone that we are going to see Harry Potter on Broadway...LOL!

It was WONDERFUL...Daniel can dance AND sing! He was marvelous...and John Larroquette FABULOUS!



It was 2 1/2 hours...luckily, Jeff was able to get up for work the next day...



Rose Hemingway (Rosemary) was incredible! Her voice is beautiful...Jeff really liked her.

After the show we walked through Times Square on the way to the subway...

SHAKE SHACK

OMG! Google "Shake Shack", there is a Shake Cam that monitors the line of the shack.


We were pleasantly surprised to find one in the Theatre District...with NO LINE! I made a little mistake and didn't get a hamburger...I got a hot dog... Do NOT make this mistake...I had a bit of Jeff's burger and it is DELICIOUS! I did have the frozen custard....totally yummy! Fries were good also.
