Obons

On Friday night we visited two temples to see how Obon is in the islands...
The first one was the Soto Zen Temple in Aiea...Cindy's, who works at the Ko'Olina Beach Club, family is in charge of the andangi making there. The Okinawan dango (donuts) have become Jordan's favorite...but, only if they are not tossed in sugar...of course, Neil and I like the sugared ones!

The Suyamas joined in the fun...and we should have timed Karen, she was itching to join in the odori (dancing) as soon as it started...

After we were able to pull Karen away from the dancing, we went to the Pearl City Honganji Obon. The first dance that we saw looked like so much fun...the teenagers were dancing in the middle and made it look like the "Electric Slide meets Obon Odori". Totally fun to watch! Way too fast for me to keep up...

While we were picking up some t-shirts, Tanko Bushi started...by the time we made it out...we took 6 steps and it was over...so sad...we danced a few more dances before the Okinawan dancers started...they got me thoroughly confused and Kristen and I gave up...Karen hung in there.

One of the funny things that happened...Jon Riki Nakamatsu is running for Lt Governor of Hawaii...we bumped into him at last week's Obon at the Soto Zen temple in Honolulu....we bumped into him again in Aiea and Pearl City. Brandon, his campaign manager, remembered us...too funny...nice guy! Turns out John Riki was a few years behind our friend Cindy in high school...here is a picture with me and Brandon.
